There's something reassuring about a proper gooseneck wall light. With its gracefully curved arm and wide, downward-facing shade, the Harlow throws a warm, focused pool of light across your front door, path or patio, just like the old farmhouse and railway lamps that inspired it. Lit at dusk, it gives your home a friendly, lived-in glow. Unlit by day, it still adds real character to plain brickwork or a rendered wall.

It looks wonderfully at home beside the front door of a Victorian terrace, above the back door of a cottage or on the garden wall of a modern new-build, where it softens clean lines with a touch of vintage warmth. Made from sturdy wrought iron with a hand-aged finish, every lamp has a slightly weathered, heritage look straight out of the box.

Tip: for that classic heritage glow, fit a warm white (2700K) LED filament bulb, and mount the light roughly 1.7–2 m from the ground beside a door so the light falls across the step rather than into your eyes. For fully exposed walls, choose an LED bulb rated for outdoor use.

Installation

This is a hardwired light and must be installed by a qualified electrician in line with Part P of the Building Regulations. Outdoor connections should be made into a suitable weatherproof junction or back box, and the electrician will confirm the best mounting position for your wall.

Care

Always switch off at the mains and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Wipe the arm and shade with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, pressure washers and harsh household cleaners, which can damage the aged finish.

Good to know

• The aged finish is applied by hand, so the weathered effect varies slightly from lamp to lamp. That's part of its charm.
• For the longest life outdoors, a spot sheltered under an eave, canopy or porch is ideal.
